On December 20, 2018, Mozilla announced that Firefox Focus now checks all URLs against the Google Safe Browsing service to help prevent people from accessing fraudulent sites. A panel will pop-up and shows what kind of trackers are on that page: ad trackers, analytics trackers, social trackers or content trackers. Users can also view types of trackers on a page by tapping on the shield icon next to the URL bar. In the other Firefox browsers, users have to enable the Tracking Protection feature inside the browser preferences manually. The blocking of third-party trackers (except "other content trackers") is enabled by default. Content blocking is achieved using the Disconnect block lists. įirefox Focus is designed to block online trackers, including third-party advertising, with the end goal of both improving browsing speed and protecting users' privacy. On Android, it used the Blink engine in version 6.x and earlier, and it has used GeckoView since version 7.0. To bypass content-blocker restrictions from Apple, Firefox Focus uses the UIWebView API on iOS devices. Since July 2018, Firefox Focus is preinstalled on the BlackBerry Key2 as part of the application Locker. As of January 2017, it is available in 27 languages.

In June 2017, the first release for Android went public and was downloaded over one million times in the first month. However, it can still work solely as a tracking-blocker in the background of the Safari browser on Apple devices. It was developed into a minimalistic web browser shortly afterwards. Firefox Focus was initially a tracker-blocking application for mobile iOS devices, released in December 2015.

Many services are optimized for Chrome and Firefox before Safari, so you’re likely going to get a better overall experience with another browser./en-US /firefox /browsers /mobile /focus /įirefox Focus is a free and open-source privacy-focused mobile browser from Mozilla, available for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. It’s not just Google services that work better in Chrome. For example, Google has several popular web-based apps, such as Docs, Drive, and Maps, and while they can all be accessed using Safari, they tend to offer better performance and features when using Chrome. Apple tends to focus on its own ecosystem of apps, and the web experience, even for iCloud, isn’t as good as other browsers. If you tend to use web-based apps and services, you might find the experiences with those better on a different browser. Here are five reasons why you might want to try out another browser on your Mac. You’ve probably heard of them-Chrome, Firefox, Brave, DuckDuckGo–but if you’re a longtime Safari user, you might not think you need to stray. But there are plenty of other options out there. Apple has optimized it for its own chips and the macOS operating system, so it’s fast and syncs nicely to your iPhone and iPad. Safari is the default browser on every Mac, and it’s quite good.
